Have you heard of Annie Jump Cannon? Nope. Neither had I until I wrote this post.
Annie Jump Cannon is "as an American astronomer whose cataloging work was instrumental in the development of contemporary stellar classification." I couldn't have said it better myself Wikipedia. She basically created the Harvard Classification Scheme. I just asked my class if they knew what the Harvard Classification Scheme was. Maybe everyone was to busy to listen, or nobody, not even the teacher raised their hands. Basically the Harvard Classification Scheme is a way of classifying stars. Bassically she classified stars by group and temparature. More on this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Jump_Cannon Anyways, being a girl, her father said there was no way she was doing astronomy, but her mom cheered her on the whole way. I have to go, but as Wikipedia says, "Cannon helped women gain acceptance and respect within the scientific community" Thanks for the great Quote Wikipedia. Thanks for reading, Buzz Hey Guys. Buzz here. By now you probably know what a big astronomy buff I am, but this has been strengthened by today's prediction of finding life elsewhere in the universe by 2025.
Okay. So this is a big deal. GTG. In school Will write more later. http://www.space.com/29041-alien-life-evidence-by-2025-nasa.html Hey guys. Buzz here. Sorry I haven't been around recently, It's been Easter and just so busy!!
Today will have to be a quick post, so here are a few facts about Ada Lovelace. - She was Lord Byron's daughter - She was probably the first official woman computer scientist - She programmed the first computer - She was never given complete credit - She was the subject of gossip because her father was famous More Later!!! Buzz For those of you that bothered to read the title, you are probably thinking "What the heck! Elsie Wollheim wasn't a scientist!" No, she wasn't but she is still important in the scheme of things.
Elsie Wollheim is one of the original Futurians, a group of science fiction writers. She was the daughter of a jeweler, and attended Hunter Collage for Bookkeeping, which she did, almost religiously for her father during the Great Depression. She joined the Futurians and published many of their books, and ended up writing her own book, afterwards classified as a Magazine, called Highpoints, that was a one hit wonder. Now, do you know who she is? This is really tragic. She was a great Futurian, but unfortunately, she is not known, except in the "Spouse" position on any good websites because she married Donald Wollheim, another famous Futurian writer. She passed away in 1994 without a trace that she was even there. Pass her story on. Have you heard of Mary Sherman Morgan? I hadn't until last week.
Mary Sherman morgan is the world's first female rocket scientist. I didn't know about her until last week when I first read the new book about her by her son, George Morgan. She kept her job identity secret from her friends and family for a very very long time. Even after she created Hydyne, the very fuel that boosted the Jupiter-C rocket, delivering the first satellite into space. I apologize for the shortness of this post. I have lots of homework and not too much time, so this post had to be short and snappy. I will probably write a follow up to this one with more info when I have more time (probably tomorrow)! Thanks for reading, Buzz Hi Guys. I'm Buzz. This is not my real name, But I would prefer to keep my identity secret. It's better that way.
Hi. Are you a girl who loves science? Me too. I LOVEEE science. It isn't all of me, but it makes up most of who I am. In this blog, I will write about women in science. First, a few facts about women in science:
Now, I am not saying men shouldn't be scientists, I am just saying that we need more girls!!! Where we show up, we show up in very small amounts, especially in science. Let me introduce you to someone very close to my heart (I don't know her personally, I just love her, and want everyone to know her story) who broke this barrier. Her name is Rosalind Franklin. Rosalind Franklin is a women from the 40s (who decided to be a scientist at age 15) who worked on the Tobacco Mosaic project with X-Ray crystallography, although this is not all that makes her so great. She was the one who REALLY discovered the structure of DNA. Do you know, that Watson and Crick stole their "discoveries" from Rosalind Franklin? Rosalind had some extra time on her hands, so she looked at DNA with X-Ray crystallography taking the now famous "Photo 51". She then put it in her desk, and began to study it. Not yet completely knowing that it was the structure of DNA-the double helix. This was all with the help of Maurice Wilkins, the man who cheated her out of her own discovery. He let Watson and Crick into Rosalind Franklin's office to look at the photo and finally figure out the structure of DNA. Then, Franklin, Watson, and Crick published "their" findings in a science journal- unfortunately because Franklin was a woman, her findings were put at the end of the journal, so everyone read Watson and Crick's first. Along with "someone" going into her report and changing it so that it referenced to Watson and Crick, she died a few years later (at the young age of 37) of ovarian cancer, probably a result of working with such high levels of radiation. Because the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded posthumously, Watson and Crick got the award, instead of the much deserving Rosalind Franklin. Unfortunately, Rosalind has not yet received credit, so pass this story on. Want to know more? Go to https://www.sdsc.edu/ScienceWomen/franklin.html . It is a great website with lots of information on Rosalind Franklin, along with her unfortunate story, and more cool facts that I didn't have time to mention. Happy reading!! |
