Have you heard of Annie Jump Cannon? Nope. Neither had I until I wrote this post.
Annie Jump Cannon is "as an American astronomer whose cataloging work was instrumental in the development of contemporary stellar classification."
I couldn't have said it better myself Wikipedia.
She basically created the Harvard Classification Scheme.
I just asked my class if they knew what the Harvard Classification Scheme was. Maybe everyone was to busy to listen, or nobody, not even the teacher raised their hands.
Basically the Harvard Classification Scheme is a way of classifying stars. Bassically she classified stars by group and temparature.
More on this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Jump_Cannon
Anyways, being a girl, her father said there was no way she was doing astronomy, but her mom cheered her on the whole way.
I have to go, but as Wikipedia says, "Cannon helped women gain acceptance and respect within the scientific community"
Thanks for the great Quote Wikipedia.
